Ok, or you can post a link to the picture with a warning so that people can choose to see you mostly naked rather than not having a choice. Something like "I am wearing pasties in this picture, but it's not very safe for work so click here to see it" or something like that

So, here’s my critique:

I like the composition , with the marmot in the foreground and the background fading off into the fog bank. The pose of the marmot also matches well with the serenity of the surroundings, and gives the who image a peaceful quality. Exposure also seems spot on, as no portions of the images are distractingly light or dark. Depth of field is also good, as everything from front to back is in acceptable focus, yet the marmot still stands out quite well because of where it is placed in the image. The stream that forms a diagonal line also draws the eye across the photo.

However, the fog has a strange, unnatural reddish color cast that detracts from the overall image. Sharpness could be improved a bit as well, as the marmot, rock, and nearest trees area bit too soft. There also seems to be a bit of distortion at the edges of the image, particularly the left side, as the trees seem to be leaning outward rather than ascending vertically.

Overall, this is a very good image, and most of the minor issues could be corrected using photo processing software.

What are your thoughts on the photo's dynamic range?

Remember, any time you critique a photo, either formally or informally, it can help you as a photographer. Get into the habit of looking at photos and see what you can take away from each of them. It will make you a better photographer.

Just as long as you aren't forcing (almost) nudity on people, you should be fine

Ah, it's a marmot. And it's not that it's too bright on the upper left, it's the redness, not the brightness that was bothering me.

that is very true, I have learned a lot of new tricks and improvements I can do just by looking at the pictures everyone is submitting.

This isn't a HDR image, if that is what you are getting at. The bright spot at the top left isn't quite blown out, and there are no darks that have lost all detail.

Before I unveil this month’s photography theme, it’s time to award another gift card. Considering I used to teach at the college level, I have a thing for testing people on their reading assignments. The articles I write aren’t “assignments,” of course, but I want to try my best to get you to read them because I truly feel they will help your photography. So, ready?

I'm going to assume that everyone is ready.....

The first person to get this one right will win the $25 GC. What is the term given to the result of your subject being strongly backlit?

That’s correct Petite Valentine! Congratulations on winning the $25 gift card! A silhouette is created when you strongly backlight an object.

No, I'm not bringing up HDR. I'm addressing comments about brightness and darkness. The choice of exposure is subjective but some people might prefer it if the picture's curves were tweaked.

Sure. I actually have worked up this photo differently for my own purposes. I increased contrast (via curves and the contrast slider, IIRC), eliminated the reddish cast, sharpened it, and minimized the pincushion distortion. As it appears is essentially how it came out of the camera (with a tiny bit of sharpening and saturation applied).

OK, the second to last thing tonight is to announce the theme for this month’s photo critiquing. As with last month, I had everyone vote on the theme they wanted to see. If your choice didn’t get selected this time, I’ll recycle many of the entries that weren’t selected for next time, so maybe it will be chosen then. So, based on popular vote, the theme for this month is…reflections! So, submit anything you like that deals with reflections. Water, mirrors, sunglasses, and windows are just some of the reflective surfaces from which you can choose. If you need further direction on photographing reflections, please check out my article on reflections.

As always, you can submit photos for critiquing to and critique other photos at the Eden Photographers tumblr site. Should you require further direction on how to submit the photos and critique photos, check out the critiquing article on the Eden Clubs and Events blog.

There's an unreal quality to the muting of the light and colors that I actually quite like. I do feel that part of the space on the left side of the pic is a bit wasted though. It reminds me of the promotional pics the BBC did for the Narnia series way back when. I love the subtlties of the colors and the picture offers me something new each time I look at it....it has surprising depth.

I also imagine many of you have been wondering what more I would have to say about the calendar that I have mentioned previously. Well, the most updated news is that…..I have no news. Sorry. Believe me, I wish I had more to give you, but sometimes decision-making happens slowly, and this is one of those cases. I’ll make certain to let everyone know as soon as possible when there is news to report.

I like the new pics on the site. The water in the birdbath is a great idea.

They were great. Seeing as how I just got back from vacation, I've not had a chance to critique them, but I really like all three a lot.
