Hey, I'm not discrediting it! It would probably give a nice softened, kind of gaussian blur effect... it would be very good for vintage-style photography or dreamy, surreal things, I bet.

I can't wait for the article now.

As for lube-smearing, why a UV filter? Cokin filters and knockoffs are cheap on eBay.
For my photography, a CP filter is wonderful. For other types of photography it wouldn't necessarily be the case. I'd rather get rid of glare and move the ISO a bit to get the shot I want.

UV filters are cheap too, but anything you stick onto the front of a camera can be used for that technique. Hell, panty hose can work.

Before I unveil this month’s photography theme, it’s time to award another gift card. Considering I used to teach at the college level, I have a thing for testing people on their reading assignments. The articles I write aren’t “assignments,” of course, but I want to try my best to get you to read them because I truly feel they will help your photography. So, ready?

Yes, that's basically the effect. It sorta, kinda mimics a tilt-shift lens in its effects.

Yeah, but it's also the reason a newbie can brag that his P&S can zoom in tighter than a 55mm lens on an SLR.

Especially the cheaper ones without a full frame.

Yeah, but you just want any excuse to get lube on panty hose.

The first person to get this one right will win the $25 GC. What is the absolute worst time of day for creating artistic photos outside?

That’s close enough, Alys. Congratulations on winning the $25 gift card! Mid-day is the worst time of day for photography because of harsh light and reduced contrast. It can work for *some* photos, but in general not-so-much.

Truly, it isn't "noon" per se, but any time during the middle of the day when the sun is overhead rather than coming in at an angle. It depends on the season too, as the winter sun is much lower in the sky, even during mid-day than it is during summer.

OK, the last thing tonight is to announce the theme for this month’s photo critiquing. Not surprisingly, it will deal with depth of field, but specifically, it is “shallow depth of field.” So, using what you learned reading the article and what I covered tonight, photograph anything you’d like, but make certain to have a shallow depth of field. Remember, to do so you will need to use a small f-stop to accomplish this. If you have an SLR camera or an advanced point-and-shoot camera, you will need to select the largest aperture (smallest f-stop) you can using either the aperture-priority or manual mode and photograph your subject using that. If you have a simpler point-and-shoot, you can still participate because the auto setting on your camera will likely choose a fairly small f-stop anyway. Try to find your inner artist and make your photo as artistic and abstract as possible.
As always, you can submit photos for critiquing to and critique other photos at the Eden Photographers tumblr site. Should you require direction on how to submit the photos and critique photos, check out the critiquing article on the Eden Clubs and Events blog.

[size=16|We’re all done now, but if anyone has any questions for me, feel free to ask them. If you want to continue chatting here, please do so.
And don’t forget to donate to Taco O Doom’s Run Taco Run fundraising event for Run to Home Base – which is committed to serving the needs of veterans with combat stress and/or traumatic brain injury. EdenFantasys and Eden Gives Back have pledged their support to this worthy cause, and you can too. Tomorrow is the last day to donate, so you have a little bit of time left to support this noble charity.
