Technically just starting, but it has been a major fetish of mine for a long time, even before I started having sex or masturbating.

I'm not sure what constitutes being "in the lifestyle." My girlfriend give me a collar when we were about sixteen (I'm 22 now) but she rolled her eyes whenever I wore it. She seemed t hate my submissiveness most of the time. Can that ever count? ...Or else my current boyfriend and I have symbolically collared one another and do some D/s and petplay, and at any given moment one of us is clearly more dominant than the other (though being both switches, which one of us is dominant does vary from situation to situation, it's always clear who it is). And I'm pretty sure that counts...
So I chose the shallow end of the 3-9 years. less

Christmas will be a good year...all of the husband's gifts include such 'lifestyle' items! Very excited!

I started much younger than I should have, but with fairly responsible older people. All told I've been in the lifestyle about 9 years now. I've always known that being a slave was what I wanted and the BDSM was what got me there sexually so it wasn't a hard choice and I didn't spend a lot of years struggling with it.

Not sure what you mean by "in the lifestyle". I'm not a swinger, and never have been. Nor would I want to be/be called a slave to ANYONE, but I am fairly submissive sexually. (Though I identify as a switch.) My husband and I have been married for 14 years, and we've done some very minor things with handcuffs and a crop or two. I've always had BDSM fantasies; pretty much since I started having fantasies, that was what they were. But I am only now beginning to show my husband just how much BDSM means to me. I was very afraid of rejection before now, even though I knew in my heart how I worked.
LOL. I suppose that since I only learned today that there was a word for what I do ("switch"), you could call me a newbie. But those beginner BDSM kits aren't sturdy or rough enough for me.

It's been about three years since I first did anything kinky, but about two years since I did kinky things on a pretty regular basis. I started young. (Probably too young, in hindsight, but I still turned out okay.) At first, I would only assume a dominant role, partly because I didn't trust my partner enough to be submissive and partly because I thought that being submissive would mean I was weak. I hesitantly tried out submission with my second partner, but that was a very bad experience. He wasn't a good top at all, refused to have a safe word, and basically turned me off from BDSM. (Although the fact that he was a man also might have something to do with my lack of enjoyment. I'm gay, but at the time I was in denial.)
When I got together with my girlfriend, we were completely vanilla at first. Things took a kinkier turn, but nothing too extreme, mostly just some light tease and denial. After almost six months together, we tried some light bondage, with me as the sub. I loved it. She was much different from my previous partner, I truly felt that I could trust her, we talked about sex, and she always respected the safe word. Every single time. Now, it's been more than a year since that hesitant bondage experience, and we're much more kinky. Spanking, role play, heavier bondage, humiliation, and some more extreme things that I'm too shy to name. I'm comfortable with her, and although we're both switches, I'm the bottom about 80% of the time. I trust her so much, and I love our sex life together. She's the best I've ever had. I think the feeling is mutual.

I wouldn't call myself "just starting."
I feel like officially I've started playing with other people like 7 months ago, but in some ways I've been doing things by myself for a long time
