Being depressed has been said to kill one’s sex drive (no kidding!) and sufferers of depression get to deal with the added sorrow of their anti-depressant driving their sex drive even further down—but no more, says the FDA. The FDA has approved an anti-depressant drug that is said to not interfere with sexual desire.

The potential prescription bestseller is Viibyrd, which the FDA just gave the thumbs-up to in doses of 10, 20 or 40 milligrams for those suffering from major depressive disorder or major depression. So far, in clinical trials, it’s been seen to have side effects in children that are similar to other drugs—increased risk of suicidal behavior and thinking—but not so for adults. (Yes, antidepressants that make some people want to kill themselves. Seriously, this has been okay with doctors for awhile now.) And Viibryd’s clinical trials showed no evidence that the drug contributes to weight gain and/or loss of sexual appetite.

The loss-of-sex-drive side effect is a major reason that many people abandon their antidepressant medication, figuring that the cure is worst than the disease.
