So imagine you pull into your local mall, and there's this big van parked in one of the parking lots. At first glance, you think it's a mammogram van, or maybe a blood donation drive. But upon closer inspection, you notice the words "Free HIV testing" scrawled across the side. And when you approach the van, because entering the building without passing it is unavoidable, someone offers you a pamphlet about sexual health and a free STI test.
How would you react?
Folks at Westfield Shopping Centre in London got to find out how they'd react firsthand when nurses from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital pulled their van into the center's parking lot. With the number of positive HIV results nearly doubling in a year, they're bringing sexual health awareness and testing to the streets.
“Many young people won't come to sexual health clinics in hospitals, so we are going to them,” said Stephanie McMillan, who runs the young people outreach division in the hospital's sexual health center. “We are offering tests for common STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well as HIV, and also general health checks including blood pressure tests, diabetes screening and healthy lifestyle advice.
“Our service is completely free and confidential.”
And why not? Sounds like a good idea to us.
