“Performed by actors and based on real life stories, MyLifeColorado.com is designed to help young people understand the consequences of unprotected sex while educating about sexually transmitted infections and methods of protection,” says the “About” page. And as the intro runs, you notice that the “characters” have been crying (or would like you to think they have), or they're really high.
It's an interactive website launched by the Colorado Department of Health, and they hope it helps Colorado residents learn a bit more about sexual health than they already know. So they hired a bunch of actors, cast them as “young people” from the Colorado area. They hope the site will educate Colorado youth about the impact and details of STIs, dispel myths and misunderstandings, and teach them how to get out of unhealthy situations.
Our only concern is the site's platform. There is no real interaction with a human being. The whole site's recorded. When it says, “Ask me a question!” it lists the questions the actor has answered. It's been our experience that for sexual health education to be truly comprehensive, people of all ages respond better to actual interaction with other self-aware, sex-positive people.
Perhaps a forum is in order? In any case, the site does cover quite a bit of information to which people should have easy access. And that's a-okay in our book.
