Guys are more likely to stay with girls who cheat on them with other women than those who canoodle with other men. And women are more likely to stay with men who stray with other women, rather than guys who go for other guys. Got that?
Yes, scientists have been at it again. Let’s make it simple. Research shows – Men don’t freak out so much if their female partner goes for a little girl-on-girl action. Women are freaked out, a lot, if their male partner looks to be switching teams.
“A robust jealousy mechanism is activated in men and women by different types of cues — those that threaten paternity in men and those that threaten abandonment in women,” says Jaime C. Confer, the study's lead author and a doctoral candidate in evolutionary psychology.
This seems at least somewhat intuitive, to us. A typical straight guy, we think, is at least a bit more likely to be thinking well, that’s kind of hot when it comes to imagining a girlfriend with another girl … and not so much if they think of a girlfriend with another guy. And a typical straight woman, while generally being pretty pissed off at the notion of a boyfriend screwing around on her, seems more likely to freak out if the competition turns out to be another guy.
But we really don’t want to draw any conclusions, ourselves, since it turns out that all this scientific research is based on asking 700 college students what they think. So we’re thinking it probably applies mostly to college students. What do you think?
