The United Kingdom seems to be heading a little further into Big Brother territory, what with a new movement in Parliament to block all adult material before it even gets to British Internet users.
Currently, the plan is only in the discussion phase, as officials are slated to meet with Internet service providers about the best way to censor porn and tag porn viewers in the UK. Conservative MP Claire Perry is at the head of the movement, and she says children are at the heart of the matter. “We are not coming at this from an anti-porn perspective.” Perry told the UK Sunday Times, “We just want to make sure our children aren’t stumbling across things we don’t want them to see.”
The UK’s Internet Service Providers Association has said that such blockage would be expensive and difficult but so far the government is still pressing for their block, which at least provides “an opt-in” choice so that people could view saucy sites—once they’ve been named and numbered. Next up: Thought Police keep us from even thinking about porn. Scary.
