In Malaysia, the Obedient Wives Club (OWC) is offering classes in which women can learn how to “serve their husbands better than a first-class prostitute.” And we’d like to say, first, that we are not making this up; and second, that our immediate reaction was to be very, very offended, because the idea that any woman would even want to join an “Obedient Wives Club” sounds entirely at odds with our standard notions of feminism and female empowerment.
Then we thought a little more and we realized that if they simply changed the name of the group to “Women for Power Exchange,” we’d probably be okay with it, and that we don’t have any objection to women learning about how they can have better sex. The vice-president of the OWC, Dr. Rohaya Mohamad says it’s time for sexual prowess to take a front seat in marriage, beyond that of the traditional “good mother or good cook” roles.
“A good or religious wife should also be good in bed,” she told reporters after the launch of the club's Malaysian chapter.
And … well, we can’t help but think that there is a sex-positive message in there, somewhere, and that we should withhold judgment. Even though we really wish they’d change the name of the group, and we hope someone holds some classes for the men.
