David Michael Muringer, 40, a Florida man, has been charged in the death of his girlfriend, 48-year-old Doris Lopez, who was found stuffed in a cardboard barrel in the backseat of her car on October 29th of last year. As it stands right now, he's been charged with manslaughter and the unlawful disposal of human remains.
What exactly happened that fateful night?
Muringer at first blamed it all on drugs. Either she'd overdosed and another addict stuffed her in the box, he told police, or she'd been killed by a drug dealer. However, he changed his story a few days before his arrest, saying he accidentally killed Lopez during rough sex.
Muringer told officers he choked Lopez until she passed out while they were having rough sex and, when she came to, he did it again. The second time, he said, he left the apartment after she passed out. By the time he returned, Lopez was dead. Fearing a return to prison, Muringer kept her body in his bed for two days before deciding to seal her up in the barrel.
We're aware, of course, that erotic asphyxiation is a turn-on for some. If you're tempted, please see the link for the associated risks and a list of accidental deaths in modern history attributed to the practice.

I am in a poly relationship with my wife and another female friend. We have all know each other for 15 years or so, and know each other completely. Just a preface, nothing meant by it.
Both of them enjoy being choked and I do so to them often, but not all the time. HOWEVER, I have NEVER choked either to the point that they pass out! It's simply too dangerous to go that far. There is a very fine line between the point someone passed out and the point that you actually kill them and it's much too big of a risk. erotic asphyxiation is a big risk as is. It can cause a heart attack if the person is prone to one.....NOT during the choking though. Most heart attacks occur approx. 15 minutes AFTER the event, NOT during. If anyone is looking to do this for fun, PLEASE educate yourself before getting involved in it - ESPECIALLY if getting involved in it alone!
Just from what I gather from the above article, I would lean more towards Muringer doing it on purpose or getting VASTLY carried away with what he was doing. You HAVE to have a great deal of self-control for this type of activity as there is NO room for error. Just my 2 cents, but something smells REALLY fishy about it to me.
You are correct, Thanatos, breathe play is a very risky activity, much more so than I think most people realize. While it's impossible for us to know, based on this story, if this man intended to kill his girlfriend, he clearly engaged in activity which was life-threatening. It's SO important to understand what the risks are before you ever engage in something so dangerous.
Reminds me of the gun play couple..."I didn't know it was loaded"...
I want to know more about the "I didn't know it was loaded" guy. That was crazy!
