Online dating companies love to issue news releases about what online daters are doing, and we love to read these releases because dating tends to lead to sex. This, we think, is even true at eHarmony, a site not traditionally associated so much with sex. eHarmony likes to peddle compatibility and how eHarmony people are just so perfect for each other because of eHarmony’s secret sauce, or patented matching system, or something.
But anyway, eHarmony said last week that it was curious about the names of its most popular members, and so poked at its database a bit and found that people with traditional names get the most messages. People with the names “John” and “Jennifer” are the leading mail-getters on the eHarmony site. For guys, after the Johns— Michaels, Davids, Chrises and Mikes get the most wooing. For the women trailing the Jennifers: Jessicas, Sarahs, Ashleys and Amandas are the most popular.
Our first thought about this is that eHarmony probably attracts the most conservative daters of any site that isn’t overtly Christian, and that might explain a lot. But we’ve thought about signing up with the name “Zorro,” just to see if that would work for us.
