Abortion is a tough choice to make in any circumstance. And it’s a choice that is made even harder when the two prospective parents feel differently about the pregnancy. At what point does the mother's right to choose get outweighed by the father's right to raise his child?
Honestly, I don’t know that answer. There are so many different scenarios that could end up in the situation of a mother not wanting a baby while the father does. Is there a history of abuse? Can the father take care of the baby by himself? What would be required of the mother post-birth? There are so many different questions that would need to be asked before I could make a definitive decision on whether his rights should outweigh the rights of the mother.
The differences in every situation are why I think it should really be a case by case basis. But something of this matter would have to be handled very quickly, which is not always the case with legal matters. I hope that every potential parent can have the chance to raise their children. I think that every father should have the right to prove he can be a good parent. And every mother should consider that before making the decision to have an abortion. Giving up your body for 9 months seems like a small price to pay to be able to bring another person into this world, in almost any circumstance.
Is there a place for this kind of place in the courts? I don’t really know. The timeliness of something like this combined with the in depth character investigation it would take to make a correct decision makes me think maybe not. But I wish that more mothers would take the father's feelings into account and give their children the chance to grow up and lead happy productive lives.
