First of all you could always look at the physical differences between men and women, however I want to get deeper than that. I want to jump right into the heart of the issue: the double standard between men and women that makes us different.
Even starting in how we are raised by our families if there is ever a fight between a girl and a boy, the parents will usually side with the girl just because of the saying, “You don’t hit girls.” I heard that all the time when I was little and I threw that in my brothers faces every time they tried to beat me up. Also when we grow up, men are usually more likely to have a clean break from the family and be on their on where as women tend to stick around and be close to the family.
The double standard in fights and kissing has always got me. When two males fight the police are called for disturbing the peace, when a male and a female fight it’s considered abuse, but when two women fight it’s a “cat fight” and every one stands around and watches. Likewise when two men kiss they are considered gay/homosexual but when two females kiss it’s considered sexy.
A double standard that I find funny is that when a woman talks dirty to you it usually costs money, however when a guy starts talking dirty to you it’s called sexual harassment.
Here is a double standard that always made me angry: the double standard of sex. A guy is praised for how many girls he can sleep with but a girl is considered a slut as soon as she has sex. A girl can never win; she is a prude if she is a virgin but a slut if she has sex. What kind of double standard is that? Also have you ever heard the saying “the walk of shame?" Yea that applies strictly to women. The male version of that is the “strut of fame.” Tagging onto that a man can go around and sleep with as many partners as he wants but when he actually decides to settle down he wants his partner to have never been with anyone.
However there are a few good perks to being a woman. Emotions! Yup, emotions. When a guy gets emotional it’s not cool, he’s weak or a pansy, but when a girl gets emotional she can usually always blame it on that time of the month. Oh the benefits of being a girl.
There are so many differences between men and women and I only touched on a few but I think it’s interesting the double standard that men and women have. So why do we have all these double standards? I think it really goes back to the way our society functions. Although people say women are equal to men it is still much harder for a woman to succeed in the workplace than it is for a man. Women have come a long way since the time when we were treated as simply baby makers and had no rights, but I still believe that some of those unfair double standards are in place. Maybe in time they will disappear or maybe women will always be considered inferior to men.
