You cannot go through the supermarket without noticing that it is close to Halloween. The stores have costumes and decorations displayed in one area and then who can forget about the Halloween candy? That makes you begin to wonder if Halloween is for all ages and if not, why do the supermarkets focus their selection of Halloween costumes to all ages? What is it about Halloween that makes kids and kids at heart want to dress up for Halloween? Why are the costume companies making costumes tight, revealing, and skimpy looking?
I think Halloween is for all ages. Who doesn’t like candy and seeing the young children dressed up in their costumes? Maybe playing tricks and scaring the children is more your style, but it is something that is fun and only happens once a year.
Besides Christmas, Halloween is my mom’s, mother-in-law’s, and husband’s favorite holiday. They do not dress up, but they love the holiday. However, I’ve noticed that costumes have become skimpier looking even for young girls.
I don’t have a daughter, but I do have two sons and I don’t think it is appropriate to degrade our children with skimpy costumes. The opportunity to dress like someone else is wonderful, but what kind of impression are we sending our children when we have the young girls in heavily clad makeup and skimpy looking outfits? I went online to see some of the outfits that are for teenage girls and I noticed there were a lot of outfits that were off the shoulder, cutout at the breast area, and had short skirts or shorts.
I don’t care if the daughter would like to dress like the latest pop singer that she loves, the pop singer is not setting a good example to the young child. What happened to witches, pumpkins, ghosts, and goblins? I believe we’re allowing our children to grow up too fast. I know it is just one day and that the costumes are supposed to be just for fun, but by allowing young girls and teenagers to dress in skimpy clothing is not very appropriate.
