Spanning back to the 70's, there was a true sexual revolution. The right and ability to do sexual acts with whomever and whenever you wanted was the underlying theme of it all...And by the time the 70's came to a close, I'm sure a lot of people thought that the revolution was won and times were changing. Unfortunately, we're still fighting the good fight today.
Sexual freedom for me is a simple concept - the ability to pursue the people and kinks that I enjoy without the fear of being judged for it. Over the years, we've made great strides as a society towards that goal. Same sex couples are enjoying the most freedom (although still extremely limited) that they've perhaps ever had, parents are more willing to discuss topics of sex with their kids, most times delving deeper than just "The Birds and the Bees" talk, and even social media has embraced varying ideas of sex. But with all of that said, where are we left?
We're left in a world of half compromises. I like to consider myself sexually free. I have the right to date someone of the same sex, I have the right to buy sex toys...I even have the right to be chained to my backyard and tied to a post while being flogged if that was my thing. But it's not just laws and rights and the ability to do something that makes you free. It's society. And the fact of the matter is society as a whole just hasn't opened up enough for anyone to call themselves sexually free.
So until the day that I can walk down the street holding the hand of my boyfriend without contemptuous stares drilling into us every step we take...Until the day that I can proudly tell that I enjoyed being tied up during sex, or even until the day I can just hold a conversation about sex with someone without it becoming weird or awkward...Until those things happen, I don't think I'll ever be truly sexually free outside the confines of my own bedroom.
