Sex is something we’ve all been doing forever. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here now would we? But sex has always had a stigma attached to it. It was something that good people didn’t talk about, and good girls and boys refrained from it until they were married, and then never discussed it. I’m glad that I have come of age now where sex as a topic is something that is much more acceptable than at any time before, though we still have a ways to go before everything is acceptable.
I think sexual freedom is important. If you live in the United States you have a belief that you are free to do what you would like to do. There’s freedom of religion and freedom of choice, but it seems that only recently have people begun to be able to express themselves in a sexual way without fear of reproach. I was always pushing the sexual boundaries when I was younger, especially in college. I was that guy trying to see and experience everything I could, and many people shunned me because of it. I found out who my real friends were quickly because there were many people whom I thought were friends who mocked me or abandoned me when they found out I was interested in BDSM and other deviant things. I definitely felt different because of my tastes and desires and after a point I started to hide them away.
When I met my wife I explained all of my desires and feelings and she accepted them without any type of judgment. Over time she has grown to like some of those things as well and we have explored different things as a couple. It is interesting as to what is okay to talk about. We don’t make a habit of discussing our sex lives with a lot of people, but it is okay for us to talk about some light BDSM play with people without any fear of judgment. I think society has come a long way in being able to not judge that taste. But if we were to mention some of our other desires, more intense BDSM play, partner swapping or things of that nature, I’m pretty confident we’d face the same type of scorn that I faced a decade ago.
I’m glad I live in an age where sex is at least talked about and accepted as something that people do for fun. I’m hopeful for the day when I can talk about all of the different desires that I have and not be judged for it. So yes, sexual freedom is really important to me, but I feel we still have a ways to go before everyone is viewed without judgment.
