The right to the child
I think every single life should be sacred from the moment it has been created. I think all little angels should have a chance to be born, and to be born into a good, caring, and loving family. All kids should be granted a kind world, to raise them to be happy, contented, kind adults.
Should. But the world is not perfect, and sometimes things just happen.
While I support life, I am also a woman and I do not support a life of a baby over their mother's. If a pregnancy endangers the mother, I am supporting its termination. It might sound cruel, but not all lives are equal at this stage: losing an unborn child is a horrible thing, but losing your beloved spouse, your mother or sister over an unborn baby is even more painful. Losing the mother costs more than just one life. It costs more than the baby, even if the mother would do anything to carry the child to term. In this case, I support the father’s right to his beloved one.
If one of the parents does not want to keep the child, only the other, obviously I support life. If the mother is the one who wants the baby, nothing should stop her from carrying her child. If they live in a family, they should talk, consider. Hopefully the father would come to terms with accepting the child too, as fraternal love is important to all kids.
If it is the father who wants to keep the child, I think he should have a say. He should have at least a few days or a week to try to convince the mother not to terminate the pregnancy. Not long enough to endanger her if she still decides to abort the baby, but a little time to consider his point of view. Maybe she is in a too emotional state, and needs a calm, more objective perspective. Maybe she will grow to love the child. Maybe not, but the father should have at least a small chance. In the end, no woman can be forced to carry a baby they do not want.
But of course not all pregnancies happen in loving families. But what is the right thing to do if the woman only wanted the baby, maybe only get child support? What if it was the father who insured the mother would conceive so he could chain her to himself? I guess they both should be protected from “unplanned, unwanted parenthood” by law, but I do not know how that could be done.
