When I was a kid, Halloween was all about dressing up like my favorite super hero and gorging on candy. And for my toddler that's what it's still about, but somewhere along the way for me and most adults Halloween became a sexy holiday. In the last decade it seems that women’s costumes have morphed into sexy and risqué outfits that allow everyone to experiment. But why does almost every costume seem to be sexy these days?
I think Halloween is a great time for people to experiment and be someone they’ve always fantasized about, without having to change their entire personality. That Playboy Bunny costume makes you the center of attention for one night and you feel incredible, but you wouldn’t feel comfortable being the center of attention all of the time. I think this is a fantastic way to explore yourself and your sexuality without having to worry about the stigma that you could face if you did this at any other time. During Halloween all bets are off, and everyone is a little more accepting of sexy behavior. I think it’s because everyone wants to be a little more open, but it’s only during this time that society loosens the shackles and doesn’t judge as harshly for all who choose to experiment.
Do we need to worry about this? I don’t think so. Holidays can be two distinct things without being a problem. I’m a case in point. When I’m thinking of Halloween I’m thinking of my little boy's Captain America costume and he being old enough to go trick or treating for the first time. But then I’m also thinking about the costume party my wife and I have been invited to and the fact that we’re trying to pick out a sexy costume for each of us to enjoy ourselves. There is a dichotomy, but I don’t see a problem with looking at Halloween in two different ways.
I think it’s healthy for people to experiment with sexuality, and Halloween is a safe way for us to explore ourselves and our fantasies without being judged too harshly. Halloween is still for kids and candy, but I’m glad that we as adults can have fun with this holiday as well.
