Ugh. Halloween. Every year I pretty much dread the coming of Halloween. Sure, pigging out on candy and watching scary movies is fun, but it kind of sucks when you don’t feel comfortable joining in on the fun at a costume party.
The selection of costumes is poor at best. If you’re in the misses or juniors sizes, be prepared for some super skimpy costumes. Looking for a good female pirate costume? Good luck. The closest you’ll find is sexy pirate wench. The selection for those in plus sizes is also lacking. You’re plus sized, so obviously you’re ashamed of your body and want every inch of it covered from the neck down.
Taking a look at the men’s selection of costumes, you’ll find that they get all sorts of amazing people and things to be. Not one of them is a slutty version, too. If you want to be a pirate, you’ll get to be a creepy pirate like those on TV and in books.
How is this fair to everyone? Not every smaller girl wants to wear something revealing for Halloween, just like not every plus sized girl wants to look like she’s hiding her body. I’ve honestly given up on purchasing a costume, just because I can’t find anything decent to wear.
I live in Michigan. It’s cold. If I want to go to someone’s haunted hayride party in costume, I’ll freeze to death unless I wear clothing underneath it. Even when I was a kid, we always looked only for costumes we could wear clothing underneath. Unfortunately, as an adult woman, it’s not possible anymore.
It’s cool to have a sexy Halloween party for adults, but I just don’t feel it’s cool to offer costumes only to select sizes and genders. Halloween is all about having fun and maybe even scaring the pants off your partner (literally). You should be able to choose a costume that suits your mood and personality, not your body size and gender. There is such a thing as being sexy without being super revealing.
