I don’t think that Halloween is just for children. I think that it is a fun holiday that is for all. I like the idea of stepping outside of myself and dressing up in an outfit that I couldn’t wear in my everyday life, or wear outside of my house anyway. I can be whomever I want to be, the masquerade is fun, getting outside of myself and my everyday dole drums. We can play out some of those fantasies we have in the guise of a holiday.

If I dress up for Halloween and someone who knows me figures out that it is me, it’s Ok. If they knew that the “costume” that I had on I actually owned. I didn’t purchase it only for the holiday, they might be a little too judgmental.

I envy those teenagers who get to die their hair the fun colors and wear it wild. They have the freedom to wear what they want. It’s like we grow up and we can’t look the way that we want because of the whole “societal expectation thing”. Why did we have to become such stuffy grownups? I actually encourage my teenagers to die their hair cool colors and wear what they want because I know this is about the only time they will be able to do it. I love when we get to celebrate out individuality.

I did have my tongue pierced and I was told that the expectation was different for nurses and that my patients wouldn’t trust my professionalism if I had my tongue pierced. What’s funny is that now-a-days even some of the Doctors have their noses pierced.

I can’t wait until I am old and no longer working. I am going to be the old grandma with the tats and the florescent hair wearing the Goth clothing. I won’t have to wait for Halloween.
