One topic I find that readily comes up in my daily conversations is nipple piercings. Many men and women alike are extremely curious once they find out I have nipple piercings and begin to ask questions, obviously having considered the piercings before. Here is my Q&A of these most commonly asked questions:
Did it hurt?
Yes. All piercings hurt on some degree. That said, the pain wasn’t unbearable and didn’t last long. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different but from talking to others as well, it seems that the consensus is generally that the pain is worth it. If you want something comparable to the pain, it hurt about the same amount as my nose piercing. Warning: nipple piercings do hurt more for men than women because nerves are more concentrated in the male nipple.
How did the piercings affect your body image?
Before piercing my nipples, I was extremely self-conscious about my body with my A-cup breasts being my “worst attribute” in my mind. I joked with friends that I was only piercing them to “give my playmates something to actually play with.” The piercings certainly did provide that but they also greatly improved my confidence by decorating a part of my body I disliked.
How do partners react to them?
I have never heard any complaints about them; I've only heard compliments! Most partners seem to think it's very sexy to feel so stimulated from breast massages as a result of the piercings. That said, there are people out there who do dislike these piercings.
Are your nipples always hard now?
Not any more than usual! Initially, the piercings do keep your nipples hard at all times. Within a couple weeks of healing, your nipples do calm down and only harden in “normal” situations like when you are aroused or cold.
Did you lose sensitivity?
Quite the opposite! There are accounts of some people losing sensitivity but I personally gained it significantly. My nipples weren’t very sensitive pre-piercing but now, I can’t even describe the intensity of a mere touch to them. Some people are even able to have a breast orgasm from the stimulation they feel.
Can your partner(s) be rough with them?
Absolutely! Once the piercings are healed, they can be bitten and tugged without complication. Ropes and tape shouldn't hurt them either (or at least haven't in my experience).
Are nipple piercings only for the promiscuous or kinky?
Not at all! Nipple piercings can fit into any person's style! They can be a great piercing just for yourself or for your partner(s). They are also perfect for the kinky to add some extra flair to their BDSM or even for the more conservative to just decorate their goodies.
How long did they take to heal?
Mine healed within about 7 months. Depending on how well you care for them and how your body reacts to metal, it can take anywhere between 6 months and 1 year, with the general population leaning closer to the 1 year mark. Remember: even if they look and feel healed, they may not be! If you want to change the jewelry and aren't sure if they are healed, you can go in to your piercer to have him or her do it. Generally the piercer will do changes for free.
How do I care for them?
Sea salt soaks! For the first two weeks, you should soak them in warm sea salt water (1 tsp in 1 cup of warm water) for at least 10 minutes twice a day. After that, you should soak them once a day until they are healing. Touching them should be avoided as with all new piercings. Also, never use peroxide or alcohol because these actually dry out the skin and kill tissue.
Can you wear a bra while they are healing?
YES. You absolutely want to wear a bra at all times for the first couple weeks or so. Otherwise, every step you take will bounce your breasts and rub the piercings against your shirt fabric--not a good feeling. Sports bras are a godsend during those few weeks.
What type of ring or bar should I get?
I’ve switched between horseshoes, captive bead rings, and barbells. I think all types look good, it is just a matter of personal preference. That said, bars are more comfortable. Arguably the best thing about nipple piercings is that plain or fancy, all rings look good. There’re only a couple of guidelines you should stick to: You should make sure that they are either 14g or 16g and are preferably made of titanium.
Can I stretch the piercings to a higher gauge?
You can! I have no experience with this, but I have seen nipple piercings stretched up to 0g.
Where did you get them pierced?
I pierced them myself. I would in no way advise others to take this route of action since many complications can arise from self-piercing. Unless you have professional piercing experience, don’t pierce yourself. You won’t regret getting them professionally pierced.
Would you do it again? Do you regret it?
Absolutely! The only thing I regret is not piercing them sooner!
Do you suggest this piercing to others?
It was one of my best decisions and I always tell others that if they want to do it, they absolutely won’t regret it.
