The long national nightmare is over: Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress today. The United States, torn apart these past two weeks by revelations that Weiner has carried on lascivious digital conversations with friendly women and even sent them lascivious photos of his Member of the House, is spared further agony.
Our leaders in Washington have been totally distracted by Weinergate, you see. You can hardly expect them to concentrate on the economy and war and defunding Planned Parenthood and such when they are totally fascinated by thoughts of now-former Rep. Weiner's manhood.
If you detect a bit of sarcasm, well, we're guilty. We don't think Weiner's personal transgressions deserved nearly the amount of attention they have received. He has been hounded from office. It seems likely that if he broke any laws at all, it involved maybe using government-owned office equipment for personal communications. Horrors! We'd cut him a break on that.
We're not defending his behavior but we are more appalled by the reaction to it. He's answerable to his spouse and to his constituents. Neither she nor they seemed inclined to give him the heave-ho, as yet.
Congress and the media have embarrassed themselves more by their preoccupation with this matter than Anthony Weiner embarrassed himself.
Anyway, so long, Anthony. We hardly knew ye. Anyone want to take bets on how long it will be before the next sex scandal?

There will be a shortage of government freebies in NYC since Weiner resigned, hard hearted Bloomberg is now left to stop the flow of goodies without any opposition. Even if Weiner was a weirdo there never was a better fighter for the downtrodden. It was a blessing to get a freebie from Weiner`s right hand even if his left hand was on his crotch.
