The most famous moment of at least the last week, on the Internet, was captured by Getty photographer Richard Lam in Vancouver, during the riots following Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. There, behind the helmeted and baton-wielding policeman, bathed in the glow of arson fires, in front of what looks like a war zone, a couple lies in the street, kissing.
It does not look real, in this day and age. It looks staged, or as though it was manufactured on a computer screen. Couples do not kiss while lying in the street during riots.
Well, wait a second. Why wouldn’t they? The whole story came out yesterday. Video showed the couple, Scott Jones and girlfriend Alex Thomas, had been knocked to the ground moments earlier by riot police.
“I was just trying to calm her down,’’ Jones told the TODAY show, in an exclusive interview. “It was pretty scary for her, and it seemed like the best thing to do.’’
Forget the Internet craziness. Forget the cynicism. Just look at the photo and think: “Good Boyfriend. Great Couple.” And smile. What else do we really need to know?
