A lady named Laura Fotusky in Barker, N.Y., is rather unhappy with the legalizing of same-sex marriage. So unhappy, in fact, that she's quit her job as town clerk.
Fotusky says in her resignation that her last day will be July 21st, 2011, because the Bible takes precedence over man-made laws.
“The Bible clearly teaches that God created marriage between male and female as a divine gift that preserves families and cultures. Since I love and follow Him, I cannot put my signature on something that is against God,” Fotusky wrote. “I would be compromising my moral conscience if I participated in the licensing procedure.”
The law allows for religious organizations to refuse to perform ceremonies, but doesn't allow for religious city employees to refuse to issue licenses. And another town clerk in Volney has expressed concerns and asked for outside help to be brought in to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he's okay with city and state employees resigning over the new law: “When you enforce the laws of the state, you don't get to pick and choose the laws.”
