She has sex with the farmer behind the tractor, the bicycle repairman against a closed door, a man in the shadow against a wall. She’s Israeli Hagar Ben Asher, and we’re talking about her movie, The Slut, featured during Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival. Ben Asher wrote the script, directed and played the lead character, Tamar.
“I wanted to find a way to portray a character whereby it is hard to decide whether she is a victim or a victimiser,” Ben Asher told AFP in an interview. “She is driven by the need to please, which is the opposite of giving.”
As for the title, Ben Asher counts herself among those who wants to reclaim the word “slut”: “I think I picked up on that title just because I wished to have the possibility of breaking the judgment behind what you might call a slut.”
We’re not expecting a big-screen release of The Slut, here in the U.S. But we like to know what we’re missing at least. Somehow, we’re thinking Ben Asher’s work is a little more erotic than what we can expect out of Hollywood this summer. Hollywood Reporter says: “Director Hagar Ben Asher may be the first female director of a legitimate feature to film herself performing in a hardcore sex scene.” We like her already.
