If you enjoy watching Sister Wives on TLC you’re in luck—soon you should be able to watch the Kody Brown family lawsuit, challenging Utah’s state polygamy laws, unfold as well.
The New York Times reported yesterday that Utah law enforcement officials announced shortly after the show started that the family was “under investigation for violating the state law prohibiting polygamy,” and that the Browns are expected to file their own lawsuit tomorrow. That suit “builds on a 2003 United States Supreme Court decision, Lawrence v. Texas,, which struck down state sodomy laws as unconstitutional intrusions on the “intimate conduct” of consenting adults,” writes the Times’ John Schwartz. The Browns are asking that respect for their private lives be extended to polygamist families as long as they’re not violating any other laws.
TMZ reports today that the family’s attorney made a statement on his blog that said, in part : “We are not demanding the recognition of polygamous marriage. We are only challenging the right of the state to prosecute people for their private relations and demanding equal treatment with other citizens in living their lives according to their own beliefs.”
