“I want to share some personal news with you. Twenty-five years ago,” King announced via Twitter, “I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live. Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ Little League games.”
Larry King Live is hailed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running show on the same network in the same timeslot—with the same host. The late-night legend has conducted around 50,000 interviews over his 53-year career, and is one of the most respected broadcasters on cable television. He has won an Emmy Award, two Peabody Awards, and 10 Cable ACE Awards.
While lauded for countless in-depth interviews during his run, King is also known for not shying away from racy topics. He spoke with Lady Gaga about erotica and bisexuality, and notorious Carrie Prejean threatened to storm off set when King brought up her leaked sex tape.
King recently reconciled with his wife, Shawn Southwick, after briefly filing for divorce over allegations that King had an affair with their children’s baseball coach and his sister-in-law. Over his lifetime, Larry King has been married eight times to seven different women. Not one for Guinness perhaps, but not bad.
