In a ground-breaking deal to diffuse nuclear tensions, Iran agreed today to ship its enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for nuclear reactor fuel rods. The deal will deprive Iran of the material that could be processed into weapons of mass destruction. The fuel rods will be used to power a medical research reactor that produces cancer-fighting isotopes.
But, it’s not just uranium headed to Turkey. Homosexuals from Iran are gaining refugee status in the neighboring country, fleeing Iranian law that states homosexuality is punishable by death. Human rights group estimate around 4,000 homosexuals have been executed in Iran since 1979.
With clerics in Iran still claiming that immodest dress causes earthquakes, it’s no wonder many refugees are escaping to Turkey, where a recent sex tape surfaced involving an Islamist political party leader. The leader resigned because of the scandal, and his resignation opens hope for Reformist political parties to gain ground in upcoming elections.
