The “treasure trove” includes 80 boxes of letters, drawings, manuscripts and other items steeped in gay history from the homophobic McCarthy era and beyond. The collection also contains index cards documenting sexual encounters with such stars as Rock Hudson and Thornton Wilder, and a reliquary containing a lock of Rudolf Valentino’s pubic hair.
“It’s exactly the kind of material that I constantly have historians and the general public wanting to have,” said Jason Baumann, curator of New York Public Library’s Lesbian and Gay Collection.
During his lifetime, Steward obtained his doctorate in English and published gay erotica and literature under the name Phil Andros. The prolific writer is on record as saying, “I consider erotica to be the purest form of entertainment, making the most direct connection between reader and writer and material.”
