Judge Vaughn Walker overturned the ban to the approval of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on August 4th. “I am pleased to see Judge Walker lift his stay and provide all Californians the liberties I believe everyone deserves. Today’s ruling continues to place California at the forefront in providing freedom and equality for all people,” the Governornator said in an issued statement. Same-sex marriages would have resumed this week, had it not been for the appeal.
While so many lovers are left waiting, some Prop 8 opponents are looking at the bright side, such as Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
“…Despite the terrible disappointment for the many couples whose right to marry has been delayed yet again, today’s ruling includes another significant victory for our side,” Kendell said. “The court did the right thing by putting the case on a fast track and specifically ordering that Prop 8 proponents show why they have a legal right to appeal.” We’d certainly like to know why, too.
In more cheerful news, star Neil Patrick Harris of Doogie Howser and How I Met Your Mother fame announced recently that he and his partner are expecting twins—and Doogie may be quitting Hollywood to be a stay-at-home Dad.
Harris, who’s been given the illustrious title of “Gay Man of the Decade,” seems to be making plans to move from Hollywood to New York City with his “soul-mate,” David Burtka, before their officially-adopted twins are born. Sounds like they’re living the life—with or without Prop 8’s approval.
