We were wondering what the heck happened to our Schweddy Balls. Now we know.
Since Ben & Jerry’s debuted the new ice cream flavor, named after a popular Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, purveyor of holiday foods, a number of stores have declined to carry the flavor. In addition, a group called One Million Moms has been pressuring retailers not to carry it and asking parents to bitch to Ben & Jerry’s “to stop production of the item,” according to the AP. Even in Las Vegas, Nev., some stores won't carry “Balls” for fear of offending customers.
Because, you know, it’s important to teach your kids you are powerless to simply opt out of things you don’t like, but to bitch until no one else can enjoy them either. Brats. Not surprisingly, plenty of other people are crazy for “Balls.” Even with limited availability, AP reports, the new flavor— featuring fudge covered rum balls— quickly became the company’s most popular limited edition flavor ever. The AP spoke to one mom whose family— including her 10- and 14-year-old children— “eagerly await the day when they can find Schweddy Balls in a supermarket near their home in David, Fla.”
Us, too. We just have to look at those Balls to want a taste and are going to keep looking for it in stores near us. Gosh darn it, is it too much to ask to want ourselves a Schweddy Little Christmas?
