Nigel “Spud” Ely, formerly a soldier in Britain’s SAS regiment, was working with the media and said the soldiers had given him permission to this particular piece of ass back home with him after US Marines had toppled the bronze statue. From News.com.au:
“The U.S. Marines had erected a cordon of tanks to guard the square. But I wanted a piece of the statue— and when I mentioned to the Marines that I was an old soldier and with the press they told me, 'No problem, buddy—help yourself',” Ely said.” He only wanted a handful but ended up with about two square feet (everyone’s ass is a little bigger once you get close enough, eh?)
Ely says he’d forgotten about the fallen heinie until his group was arrested in Kuwait; he was allowed to keep it after claiming it was armor for his truck. He’s having Hansons Auctioneers of Derby sell the artifact and hopes to get about 10,000 pounds for it ($15,755 U.S.).
Well, the spoils of war are called booty, aren’t they? And in this case it’s true in more ways than one.
