Carrying signs that read, “Transgender equality and justice now!” and “Another straight New Yorker for marriage equality!”, about a thousand protesters stormed the Capitol building in Albany, N.Y., on Monday. Obviously, their bitch is with the GOP-controlled state senate's iron grip on the state of same-sex marriage.
Noticeably absent from the event was the man who has been leading the way, Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Though Cuomo has helped pull a number of LGBT advocacy groups into an alliance, and touts the importance of legalizing marriage equality in New York, his schedule had him elsewhere.
In his stead, Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy addressed the group and explained the governor's absence.
“I want to make one thing perfectly clear. Nobody in this state should ever question or underestimate Governor Cuomo's commitment to marriage equality. It is a top issue. The governor has made marriage equality one of his top three legislative priorities this year,” Duffy told the crowd.
Let's hope so, eh?
