Folks, if you're still allowed to check out and/or watch porn in your library, please don't watch it in a way that is visible to other patrons. No matter how old they are. Apparently, that's what started a politician in Los Angeles, Calif., on a quest to filter out porn in public libraries.
“The computer being used was in plain view of the circulation desk where several adults and children were able to see the graphic images as they checked out and returned library books,” wrote Los Angeles City Councilman Ed P. Reyes, in a motion filed earlier this year. “Although library staff has since moved the computer to an area where the screen images cannot be seen by patrons, the issue of viewing pornography on library computers remains.”
So Reyes wants to consider banning porn from libraries. It turns out, despite the general aversion of librarians to filtering or censorship, the city might just be able to force the ban, at least for libraries which are owned and funded by the city.
“I don't want to make it more than what it is,” Reyes said. He's just protecting the kids.
