With the president preparing for the $1,250-a-plate "Gala with the Gay Community" this week, reporters are asking Press Secretary Jay Carney the really hard questions. Like “What will Obama say when the gay people at the gay gala ask him what he thinks about gay marriage?”
Carney refused to make any statement on President Obama's position on same-sex marriage beyond the president's own admission that his opinion is evolving.
“What I know is what his position was during the campaign and what it is now,” Carney said. “He’s been very clear about it. He was very clear in the campaign. He’s very clear about the fact that his position is evolving. I don’t have anything to add to that.”
A White House official seems to think that President Obama's opinion's doing more than evolving, at least with respect to equality. He told reporters, “Although the President believes that this is an issue best addressed by the states, he also firmly believes that committed gay and lesbian couples should receive equal protection under the law.”
