If you've been thinking about getting tested for HIV but haven't felt quite ready, then this is your day. It's National HIV Testing Day, so there will probably be a lot more people than usual stepping up to take care of their sexual health. You won't be alone.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, early testing has big advantages including helping keep HIV in check, the ability to take full advantage of early medical treatment, and increased life expectancy. Also “early antiviral treatment is not only good for patients but also makes their infections less contagious ...” Pregnant women should also be tested early in their pregnancy so “steps can be taken that will prevent transmission of HIV to their babies.”

If you're not sure where to go or if you can afford it the CDC website has a link National HIV and STD Testing Resources with a spiffy little testing site locator link. I put in my zip code - I live in Orlando, between Mickey Mouse and the Casey Anthony trial, and was amazed to find that of 13 testing sites, seven of them have free HIV testing. Previously I knew of only one, the one I drive by every day, where I went myself to be tested just recently.
So for your peace of mind and your health go today or take a friend who needs your support. Some days it's a good thing to be part of a crowd.
