Good news on the sexual health front: UPI reports that between 2006-2010 the number of male teens who used a condom the first time they had sex increased by 9 percentage points from where it was in 2002. Who says guys don’t listen?
From UPI: “A report, “Teenagers in the United States: Sexual Activity, Contraceptive Use, and Childbearing, 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth,” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics found about 43 percent of never-married female teens— 4.4 million—and about 42 percent of never-married male teens— 4.5 million— reported sexual intercourse at least once.” Teen sex numbers haven’t changed much, UPI says, but a few things about how teens are going about it have changed at least a little bit.
For example, there was increased use of condoms combined with hormonal birth control during first sex and more young women using hormonal birth control besides the pill during first sex: 6 percent in the survey compared to 2 percent in 2002.
One stat that slightly concerns us, though: 78 percent of young women age 15-19 used a method of contraception during first time sex compared with 85 percent of young men. Now normally we don’t encourage competition between the sexes but GIRLS! CATCH THE HELL UP! It’s great that so many kids are behaving responsibly but YOU CANNOT CARRY A BABY IN A HELLO KITTY BACKPACK, YA KNOW! Sorry. We get carried away.
