Because life isn’t weird enough and because people outside Ohio might want to remember “Well, at least I don’t have to worry about running into a herpes infected wild monkey today,” here’s a story about a herpes B-infected monkey running around Ohio, The Lookout reported yesterday.
CBS News reported Wednesday that nearly 50 of the exotic animals set loose by owner Terry Thompson were killed, including “18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions.” (FYI: there are pics of the dead animals on the link). Thompson, owner of Muskingum County Animal Farm, set the animals loose before he committed suicide. The six animals that were captured were taken to the Columbus Zoo and now only the monkey, who Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz warned might be carrying herpes B, is still loose. The zoo director recommended that the animal be killed.
Famed animal expert, TV personality and former director of the Columbus Zoo Jack Hanna defended the actions of the sheriff, saying, “What was he to do at nighttime with tigers and lions, leopards, going out there?” and “In the wild this would be a different situation,” but also mourned the loss of the tigers, noting there only 1,400 Bengal tigers left on the planet.
“The most magnificent creature in the entire world, the tiger is,” Hanna said.
