We’re all used to politicians being less than the stellar leaders we deserve, but we don’t often see levels of stupidity that feel as dangerous as the one exhibited by Tennessee GOP State Senator Stacey Campfield, the person behind the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would “ban discussion in schools of sexual orientation other than heterosexuality,” according to the Huffington Post.
Tennessee, by the by, HuffPo reported in September, is the third poorest state in the U.S. with “some of the worst poverty and unemployment rates in the country,” and “Don’t Say Gay” is what their officials are evidently doing with their time.
Anyway, Campfield went on radio interview with Huffington Post editor-at-large Michelangelo Signorile, also the host of Sirius XM’s OutQ. Campfield, (as quoted here where you can hear the whole interview) said, among other things:
“My understanding is that it is virtually –not completely, but virtually– impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex...very rarely [transmitted].” and, “That bullying thing is the biggest lark out there.” and, “Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community –it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men.”
Well, there ya go, folks. Don't be gay and you won't get bullied or catch AIDS. Seriously, guy? You're from the 80s sent here to try to put an end to forward movement, huh?
Signorile debunks Campfield’s misinformed assertions of course. We’re not even going to go into the other two, but we’d still like to see him tell the grieving family and friends of two Tenn. teens who committed suicide over bulling just what a lark it is.
