A bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. David Koehler in Illinois that would have allowed religious groups to deny adoption services and foster care to same-sex couples was smacked down by a slim margin in a state Senate committee Wednesday. The vote was seven to six with one senator abstaining, which essentially kills the bill.
The bill seemed to be an attempt to be fair to religious groups that have moral issues with same-sex couples raising children. Or, you know, people having relations with someone of the same sex. But in order to be fair to religious groups, the law would be allowing them to discriminate against same-sex couples.
“This is a huge victory for the LGBTQ community and families across Illinois,” said Anthony Martinez, Executive Director of the Civil Rights Agenda, credited with bringing together the forces that helped defeat the bill. “This is also a huge win for the tens of thousands of children that are in the adoption and foster system and need loving families.”
