Do you think we’ve come a long way in combating stereotypes of women and minorities? Maybe we have but Hollywood has not, according to a survey done for the UK Film Council by Harris Interactive.
When it comes to movies, black people feel they are more often portrayed as sex-crazed drug dealers and lesbians say they are shown as obsessed with sex. And older women resent their film stereotype as sexless figures.
Four out of five lesbian, gay and bisexual people felt films focused too much on their sexuality. And a majority of Asian audiences feel movies do not accurately reflect Asian religious culture.
We know, of course, that blockbuster movies are marketed primarily to young folks, and that it’s profoundly difficult to get a realistic film portrayal of the human experience in front of a large audience. But we hope Hollywood will listen a little. We can’t remember ever walking out of a theater thinking, “Hmm. Those characters were just too nuanced and real to me. I wish they’d been more stereotypical.”
