Aside from both being states, you’d think Hawaii and Delaware would have pretty much nothing in common, but on New Year’s Day both will see their first same-sex couples enter into civil unions.
The AP reports that Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie approved the measure in February and four couples there will take advantage of it just after the stroke of midnight. Citizens for Equal Rights and Honolulu Pride is organizing a celebration at a private home in East Oahu.
Meanwhile in Delaware the law won’t go into effect until 10 a.m. but New Castle County Clerk of the Peace, Ken Boulden Jr., will open his office on Sunday to eight couples “who face special circumstances” and waive the 24 hour waiting period between getting a license and having a civil union ceremony. He won’t perform ceremonies in his office until January 5, the Republic says.
Delaware ranks among the top ten states in percentage of same-sex couples and the new law comes “two years after the General Assembly outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation, capping a decade-long effort.”
Congratulations to those couples on their doubly Happy New Year.
