What's a good way to get the court to order your husband to vacate your home and pay you $850 a month in the divorce? Claim an accident left you incapable of working. Wanna make sure you lose the house and financial support? Post all over the Internet about your love of belly dancing.
When Dorothy McGurk, of Staten Island, N.Y., and her husband when to trial, she convinced the judge that she couldn't support herself, and the judge ordered her husband to support her. Then, her husband found Facebook posts from Dorothy talking about how belly dancing affirms her existence.
"Today I decided to dedicate myself more to my dance," she wrote. "Even though I dance every day, it's not enough. It won't be enough until I dance for you all, until you feel my euphoria."
But if Ms. McGurk is so devastatingly injured, her husband asked, how can she sit in one place for hours to blog, and go belly dancing regularly?
When confronted by the court, Dorothy said her doctor prescribed dancing for her injuries, but her doctor said Dorothy lied. So the court evicted Dorothy from her home, awarded her husband 60 percent of the proceeds of selling the house, vacated the alimony order, and ordered her to pay upwards of $5,000 in court and legal fees.
