All eyes are on the circus act we're calling a U.S. Senate, this week, as this session of Congress nears a close. The House voted 250 - 157 yesterday to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" for a second time, putting the ball back in the Senate's court. Sen. Majority Leader Henry Reid (D-Nevada) says it's obvious Congress wants a repeal, and they have the votes.
And well they should. According to a CNN poll in November, 72 percent of adult Americans are in favor of repealing DADT, with 23 percent opposed and 5 percent with no opinion. Also in November, the Defense Department published a report showing 70 percent of general military personnel (excluding the Marine Corps. and specialty forces) in favor of allowing openly gay men and women to serve along side of them.
President Obama commended the House, reiterated his support for the repeal and reminded the Senate and the American people that the Joint Chiefs of Staff support the repeal as well. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell extended Defense Secretary Robert Gates' encouragement for lifting the ban to the Senate after the House vote.
And yet Senate Republicans are still dragging their heels, insisting on putting other bills first.
Sen. Reid has been threatening to extend this session through the Christmas season to make sure the bill makes the floor, but according to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) there's no indication from Sen. Reid of when the bill will be voted on.
So, what's up, Republican Senators? Did you forget you work for us? Just pass the bill, already.
