So what's Cyndi Lauper up to these days? Oh, just building the first home for homeless LGBT youth in New York state. Reports show that 20 to 40 percent of homeless people living in New York City identify as LGBT and Lauper thinks that's just “shocking and inexcusable.”
A message from Lauper on the organization's website says they'll be building new, modern studio apartments from the ground up. There will be both indoor and outdoor community space to socialize or attend education and recreation programs; Rent will be salary based and each resident will receive “ongoing assistance in obtaining employment best suited to their individual interests and skills.”
“Although TCR will not require participation in its programs,” the website says, “a variety of social and educational support services will be available to all who request them. Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy, and successful individuals they were meant to be.”
It's called the True Colors Residence and we really hope it succeeds. What a great cause, Cyndi.
