So remember back in February, when New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was all, “I'm gonna push this through somehow!” about same-sex marriage in his state? And Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos, through his spokesperson, was all “Dude, we're just focusing on the budget, right now. Same-sex marriage isn't really even a blip on the radar.” (Which is actually a really good thing when you consider the fact that almost every year the budget is late in New York, annually bringing a number of state funded programs to a screeching halt.)
Well, Gov. Cuomo was all, “I'm the king. The people love their king. Come on, people, let's make it happen,” and the people were all, “Let's make it happen. Long live the king!” And the Assembly has passed the budget he proposed, and Cuomo is incredibly popular right now and he seems dead set on getting same-sex marriage approved in New York this year.
A new coalition has been formed between Empire State Pride Agenda, Marriage Equality New York, and the New York chapters of Freedom to Marry and the Human Rights Campaign, which is a feat in and of itself. They've called it New Yorkers United for Marriage. And they're marching (figuratively, for now) to the capital insisting on equality with their king at the helm and a bill in their hands (once it's completed).
Long live the king, indeed. Here's to their success.
