The Creation Museum in Kentucky, run by and for Christians who believe the world was created by God perhaps 4000-6000 years ago, held a “date night” for couples this Feb. 11th. The event included dinner, musical performances, and a talk by museum founder Ken Ham about love and their “biblical view” of marriage. A ll that for just $71.90 ... oh, except also, you needed to be heterosexual.
John Meador (a writer for the Louisville-based LEO Weekly alternative newspaper), Joe Sonka (Barefoot and Progressive, blog) and an unnamed female guest purchased tickets to the event and showed up on time, but a fourth member of their group, a man, was late. When event security asked Sonka where his date was, and Sonka gave them some variation of “he's late,” security refused him entry.
Meador and Sonka say there's no indication on the website that homosexual couples are not welcome. But Mark Looy, chief communications officer for the Creation Museum, says it's crystal clear.
“The message was one of Christian marriage, which the Bible teaches is between a man and a woman,” Looy said.
Sonka, who says he's not gay, still has yet to be refunded his admission fee for the event, and the Creation Museum has basically suggested he wish in one hand and ... well, you get the picture.
