One of Berke Breathed’s classic Bloom County comic strips satirizes the ease with which people can get offended by everything. The strip closes with Opus the penguin concluding they have “Offensensitivity.”
Offensensitivity reached absurd heights last week when the board of a Utah school decided that the students’ choice of “Cougars” as mascot would have to be ditched because it might be offensive to middle aged women, reports Cameron Smith of Yahoo Sports.
Corner Canyon High, in Draper, Utah, isn’t even scheduled to open until 2013. The vote on the mascot and colors were supposed to be a way to “get positive attention” for the school, Smith says. He points out that “it didn’t work out that way,” and asks, fairly, why list “Cougars” as an option if it wasn’t an acceptable one?
Seriously, despite the slang term “cougar” being used to denote an older woman on the prowl for younger men, all older women aren’t cougars. That their minds leaped to “horny 40-something” says more about the members of the board than the big cat and common mascot the kids chose. Fercrissakes, we work for SexIs, and in this context we’d have thought “big mascot-type cat.” Really.
And what's so offensive about being a cougar, anyway?
In any case, the board has decided to go with the second most popular name: the MILFs.
Okay, not really. They're going to be the Chargers, unless they change their decision, which they probably will and have plenty of time to do.
Jeez, Louise. What would have happened if they’d chosen –also on the list– the Bears?
