His name, now, is Chaz Bono, and he's got one heck of a story to tell about growing up in the wrong body, and being confused about his gender identity and sexual orientation.
He was born Chastity Bono and his parents are Sonny and Cher. And Tuesday, May 10th, he's releasing his book Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man and his documentary Becoming Chaz (debuting Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on Oprah's OWN) in which he discusses all these things and more.
Like how Cher threw him out of her house when he first came out as a lesbian. And how he eventually realized he wasn't a lesbian, but was, in fact, a heterosexual man. He even talks about the strain it put on his relationship with his partner Elia.
“We had to really almost re-learn how to communicate and how to be around each other,” Chaz told Time magazine. “Things had changed. Just me saying the same thing that I would have before with a deeper voice and more of a presence.”
He says he made his coming out public to help other people understand transgender people and their issues. Good on ya, Chaz.
