It’s prom season again, which means that it’s time for school officials to get totally idiotic about same-sex dating. This year, the victim is Angelina Lange, 17, of Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y. She attends St. Anthony's high school in South Huntington, a co-ed, Roman Catholic institution of about 2,500 students. Angelina asked to bring a former girlfriend as her date to the prom.
Nope.
“Our Catholic faith specifies that marriage involves a man and a woman and our policies on dating must reflect that,” said school principal and Franciscan, Brother Gary.
“The message is that the school doesn't really care about its students and that's not a good message,” said James Fallarino of the Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Services Network. Fallarino noted, however, that the school is a private institution and has no legal obligation not to discriminate.
Yes, we knew that, too. We’re tempted to say we’ll pray for Brother Gary to come around on this one, but we know some things just take time.
